Iirc she did react, but covered it up immediately and acted like nothing was out of the ordinary, in her guise of being the new "cleaner" in a deal she made with Calcifer. At any case, she didn't want anyone she knew to see her. It's been a while since I watched it, but she was either trying to find the witch or a way to remove the curse. So, in a fit of jealous rage, she curses her.Īs for the castle, I think I too would be wary of a moving castle, but then a shelter is a shelter. The witch had lost Howl's attentions and she thinks they've been transferred to Sophie.

There was an argument with the animation staff over how to direct the film, and Hosoda was forced out. It would probably have been more faithful to the book, but also much more dreamy like Hosoda's other films. He storyboarded a very different film with a script by Reiko Yoshida. The glimpses of his struggle and his part in the war are the best parts of the film.Īs a side note, Miyazaki only took over as director and writer on this because Ghibli fired Mamoru Hosoda who was originally directing the film at Ghibli. I always saw a huge potential in the story being a fantasy outlet to explore the dark side of militarization in war even if you're on the right side, and Howls being slowly crushed by the responsibility of being able to fight with his magic but not actually wanting to be involved in conflict. In the end he couldn't really satisfy either and just made a film which has elements of the book, but also elements of the themes he wants to touch on, but neither side of the film was allowed to breath or develop. Howl's a huge mess because I feel that Miyazaki was torn between using the material to tell the actual story he wanted to and actually adapting plot points from the book. IDK, weird movie, felt pretty messy, but I did enjoy it. Maybe it makes more sense on rewatch, which I wouldn't mind because it really was a great looking movie. And maybe some stuff was lost on the dub (the voice acting was really good though). I'm willing to admit that I might have missed a few obvious things. Ending, going back in time? Howl was there afterwards because of that? OK? The whole war and Magic users plot lines didn't quite land with me. The only obvious thing was when Howl called her beautiful she immediately got old again. What was breaking the spell? She kept changing back and forth but I couldn't see a correlation. Seriously, was he supposed to be a villain? Did he steal beautiful women? What happened with that? Oh and he's a bird? But she didn't know it was Howl (an evil dude? I think?) and when it was revealed to be him she didn't react at all. She was kind of crushing on the wizard who saved her, I get that. Where was she going anyway? Just 'away' so people wouldn't see her? She was mad at turnip for finding the Castle for shelter but then she loved it? Why did the Witch curse her in the first place? what was it about? What happened in the movie? The soundtrack was good, but definitely not as noticeable as it was in Laputa and Spirited Away. Seeing the castle and magic in action was incredible.

It definitely wasn't a bad movie and the animation was absolutely amazing, probably the best looking of the five I've seen so far. Howl's is the first one where I'm not really sure what I think. And Laputa and Mononoke were just a notch below that. I've been working through the Ghibli catalog and have thoroughly enjoyed the ones I have seen so far, Spirited Away was a masterpiece, and probably one of the best movies I've ever seen.
